Learning a foreign language is part of the primary National Curriculum and is a requirement for all children within key stage 2 (KS2). At Scotts Primary School we teach French from year 3 to year 6.

We aim to ensure that pupils of all abilities develop solid foundations in these key language learning skills - properly preparing them for the next stage of their language learning journey. These skills will develop children’s ability to understand what they hear and read and enable them to express themselves in speech and writing.
Our whole school approach to language teaching and learning is in line with the recommendations of the National Curriculum and the requirements outlined in the Department for Education Languages Programme of Study for Key Stage 2.
The National Curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all pupils:
· Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
· Speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
· Can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
· Discover and develop an appreciation of a range of authentic writing in the language studied.
At Scotts Primary School we follow the Language Angels scheme of work. All classes will have access to a very high-quality foreign languages curriculum using the Language Angels scheme of work and resources. This will progressively develop pupil skills in foreign languages through regularly taught and well-planned lessons.
Children will progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary, language skills and grammatical knowledge organised around age-appropriate topics and themes - building blocks of language into more complex, fluent and authentic language.
Where possible we have made cross curricular links so that French learning links to Topics being taught in particular year groups.

KS2 really enjoyed their French cafe experience on Bastille day 2023!
To embed French across the whole school, we are using instructions in French throughout the day and in assemblies.
Year 6 have been practising writing about themselves and their families.

At the start of each French lesson, the children are given the opportunity to practise their speaking by having a 5-10 minute conversation in French. We use these slides to support their learning. The slides get progressively harder across the year groups and tie in with curriculum expectations. There are videos on each slide to support teaching the pronunciation. Through weekly repetition, the children become increasingly confident and fluent with these conversations.
